Sharjah24 - AFP: Ivan Velasquez, Colombia's defense minister, announced on Friday that his country has begun a military campaign against Marxist guerrillas who are suspected of causing a week of brutal bloodshed along its border with Venezuela.

"There has already been a first battle between the army and members of the National Liberation Army (ELN)," Velasquez stated from Cucuta, with over 9,000 troops deployed.

Struggles in the Catatumbo Region

Colombia grapples with violence in the mountainous Catatumbo area, where the ELN targets rival groups and alleged supporters.

ELN's Territory Ambitions

The ELN aims to dominate the border region, crucial for cocaine production and trafficking networks.

The offensive has claimed 80 lives, with kidnappings and displacements affecting tens of thousands, as per government and UN reports.

President Petro discusses a joint anti-gang strategy with Venezuela, despite Maduro's recent controversial election win.

Security Cooperation Talks

Defense Minister Velasquez meets with Venezuelan counterpart Padrino in San Cristobal to enhance security collaboration.

Cross-Border Allegations

Colombian intelligence accuses Venezuela of aiding ELN, while Venezuela accuses Colombia of sheltering the Tren de Aragua gang leadership.

Colombia declares a state of emergency, halts ELN peace talks, reissues arrest warrants, and boosts military presence.

Colombia faces a severe security crisis, thwarting hopes of peacefully disarming a potent militia.
