More than just a place to unwind in nature, the dam provides an array of outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy kayaking on the serene waters of the lake, hike the scenic Al Rafisah Hiking Trail, explore the region’s rich heritage, or watch the many bird species that flock to the area. This mountainous haven promises a perfect blend of adventure, discovery, and relaxation.
In the 1980s, Al Rafisah Dam was built to safeguard Khorfakkan from flash floods and provide a dependable freshwater source for local farmers and residents. Over time, as the area developed, the dam evolved into a favoured retreat for nature enthusiasts and those in search of tranquillity.
Nestled in a lush green oasis, the surroundings of Al Rafisah Dam flourish thanks to its abundant water reserves, fed by rainfall and the springs of Wadi Shie. Water cascades 55 metres into the dam's lake, meandering through flower-lined banks and offering a stunning visual spectacle.
Although Al Rafisah Dam’s lake is artificial, formed after the construction of the dam, it has become one of Khorfakkan’s most scenic spots, attracting families and visitors from across the country.
The attractions at Al Rafisah Dam draw visitors with various leisure activities, the most popular being kayaking. A range of kayak options is available, from solo kayaks for one person to tandem kayaks for two and donut boats designed for groups. Visitors can also enjoy self-driven pedal boats, get close to the mountainside to spot deer in the nearby nature reserve and take in views of the lake’s fish and diverse birdlife.
For hiking enthusiasts, the dam offers Al Rafisah Hiking Trail surrounded by rugged landscapes and towering peaks. This three-hour hike starts with an ascent to Al Suhub Rest House, perched 600 metres above sea level, before retracing the path back. The trail is well-equipped with high-quality facilities, informational signs, and strong mobile network coverage to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey for visitors.
Those interested in exploring the mountain village at the summit near the dam can follow the 1,500-metre walkway, which runs alongside the western mountain by the lake. Along the way, walkers can admire the area's vibrant birds, lush trees, and stunning flowers.
Al Rafisah Dam is steeped in history, with landmarks that tell the story of the region’s ancient human settlements. One standout feature is the castle (Al Hosn) atop a hill overlooking the dam, offering panoramic views of the dam, the lake, and the imposing Hajar Mountains.
To enhance the experience, a man-made waterfall surrounded by greenery, colourful flowers, and chirping birds flows through the dam's stones, adding an extra layer of beauty to the setting. Special seating areas are also provided for visitors to relax and take in the tranquil surroundings.
Al Rafisah Dam is particularly family-friendly, with dedicated facilities for children, including three play areas with swings, slides, and more. These bright, vibrant spaces are designed with safety in mind, ensuring a fun and secure environment for younger visitors.
