In Abuja, the capital, a stampede occurred at a charity event organized by the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama district. Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that 10 people, including four children, were killed and eight others were injured when the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m.
In Okija, Anambra state, a crowd rushed to claim gifts like rice, vegetable oil, and money, leading to another fatal stampede. While police reported three deaths, witnesses and Amnesty International Nigeria put the toll at 20, with additional injuries.
Both incidents involved mostly women and children, who were trampled in the chaos to obtain the donations.
Earlier this week, a similar tragedy occurred in Ibadan, where 32 people died during a stampede at an Islamic high school.
The country is grappling with its worst cost-of-living crisis in decades, exacerbated by recent economic reforms and soaring inflation. Amnesty International Nigeria has called for a thorough and independent investigation into these disasters.
