Israeli army tanks drive in the UN-patrolled buffer zone, which separates Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights
Sharjah 24 – AFP: Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has instructed the military to "prepare to remain" in the UN-patrolled buffer zone on the Golan Heights through the winter. Israel seized the demilitarised zone after Syrian opposition forces ousted President Bashar al-Assad, and the Israeli military has since launched numerous air and naval strikes targeting Syrian military assets.
This deployment comes amid ongoing Israeli withdrawals from southern Lebanon after months of fighting Hezbollah and continued conflict in Gaza. Israel sees maintaining its presence on Mount Hermon, Syria’s highest peak, as crucial for security.

Israel's move has sparked international criticism, including from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who expressed concern over violations of Syria’s sovereignty. The United Nations has condemned Israel's actions, citing a breach of the 1974 armistice agreement.

Israel's key ally, the United States, has called for the incursion to be "temporary." However, analysts suggest Israel may stay for months to ensure surveillance and prevent the possible fall of strategic weapons into the hands of jihadist groups. The strategic importance of Mount Hermon is also a factor in Israel's decision to remain in the region longer term.
