Sharjah24: During the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), the Cultural Office of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA) in Sharjah hosted an engaging panel as part of the Sharjah Cultural Salon sessions.
Professor Dr Sattar Said Izwaini, a Professor of Linguistics and Translation at the American University of Sharjah, conducted the event, with writer and author Salha Obaid moderating.
The session saw the participation of the head of the Sharjah Cultural Office, accompanied by several officials, writers, and individuals with a keen interest in cultural affairs.
The session delved into a range of subjects, such as the definitions of culture, identity, and exile, as well as the difficulties encountered by expatriate intellectuals in maintaining their cultural identity.
Dr Izwaini explored the idea of "cultural exile" and the internal struggles that emerge when an individual must adjust to a new cultural identity while still maintaining ties to their original heritage. He described two categories of culture: tangible culture, which includes language, customs, and traditions, and intangible culture, encompassing beliefs, values, and religion.
The session explored the psychological challenges faced by expatriates, the difficulties of adjusting to a new environment, and the impact of cultural displacement.
Dr Izwaini highlighted the significance of achieving a balance between assimilating into a new society and maintaining one's original identity. He also observed that numerous successful individuals of Arab descent in Western nations attribute their accomplishments to their strong cultural foundations, which inspire their ambition for success.
The session wrapped up by emphasizing the importance of expatriate intellectuals cultivating skills such as tolerance, coexistence, and acceptance of others in order to attain inner peace and success in their creative and professional endeavours.
