Sharjah 24: The final day of Tanweer Festival, taking place on 22, 23 and 24, November 2024, within the timeless beauty of the Mleiha desert of Sharjah, is anticipated to be a truly immersive event that celebrates the gathering of global cultures through music, art, and poetry. Envisioned by Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, this first-of-its-kind festival in the UAE aims to ignite traditional creative expression and connect people from diverse backgrounds in a shared experience of cultural enlightenment.
The name “Tanweer,” which translates to “enlightenment,” is encapsulated through this inaugural edition of the festival under the theme of “Timeless Echoes of Love and Light,” inspired by the poetic teachings of Jalal Al Din Al Rumi.
Dhafer Youssef set to enthral attendees
The third day of the festival will be headlined by the acclaimed Dhafer Youssef, a master oud player and vocalist celebrated for his innovative blend of jazz and world music. Known for his captivating performances that conjure emotional elation, Youssef’s set promises to be a mesmerising journey through intricate melodies and profound musical storytelling. His unique sound is sure to resonate with audiences under the starry desert sky and provide memories to last a lifetime.
Another highlight on the Main Stage will be the Ensemble Noureddine Khourchid & The Whirling Dervishes of Damascus, who will mesmerise audiences with their captivating music and Sufi whirling. This ensemble combines traditional melodies with the enchanting whirling of the dervishes, creating a spiritual experience that beautifully illustrates the connection between music and movement.
Vibrant performances at the Tree of Life Stage
At the Tree of Life Stage, festival-goers can look forward to poetry by Baraka Blue accompanied by Shadi's Band, who will infuse the atmosphere with their vibrant energy and rhythmic beats. Renowned Gnawa musician Hassan Hakmoun will showcase his artistic interpretation of ancient Moroccan traditions. With his powerful voice and mastery of the sintir (a three-stringed bass), Hakmoun’s performance will captivate listeners with its rich cultural heritage. Additionally, Emirati artist, poet, and multi-award-winning film director Nujoom Alghanem will also take the stage for a poetic performance, adding a profound artistic element to the festival experience.
A journey through sound and tradition
The festival will also feature Fadi Rifaai, whose evocative performances in his project Sufi Sound Journey highlight mystical Middle Eastern sounds fused with contemporary influences. Alongside him, Zahi & Sandu will deliver engaging renditions that blend traditional rhythms with a western and Indian modern flair, creating an exciting musical dialogue, and an introspective meditative process for all to witness within the desert setting.
Attendees can also look forward to incredible heritage bands from Al Malad, Al Wailyyah, and Al Liwah who will celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the region through their performances, offering festival-goers a glimpse into the vibrant history and artistic expressions that define their communities.
