Sharjah 24 – AFP: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will visit Iraq on Wednesday, marking his first trip abroad since taking office in July, state media reported Sunday. Pezeshkian will lead a high-ranking delegation to Baghdad to meet Iraqi officials at the invitation of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
The two nations are expected to sign memoranda of understanding on cooperation and security, according to Iran’s ambassador to Iraq, Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadegh. These agreements were originally planned for a visit by the late Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.
Pezeshkian has pledged to strengthen ties with neighbouring countries, including Iraq, where relations have grown closer over the last two decades. Iran is a major trade partner for Iraq and holds significant political influence, particularly in Baghdad.
