Sharjah 24: The United Arab Emirates and the rest of the world celebrate World No Tobacco Day, which falls on May 31 of each year, with the aim of educating people about the dangers of tobacco, its effects, and the serious health consequences of smoking.
Smoking is considered an addictive behaviour and has been linked to several serious diseases that lead to death, including lung and laryngeal cancer, pulmonary embolism, premature aging, heart attacks, and strokes. Also, 1 in 10 people lose their lives due to diseases resulting from tobacco consumption, and it kills 8 million people annually, and 700 million children are exposed to passive smoking, according to a World Health Organisation report.
Therefore, the UAE pays great attention to combating smoking and promoting public health by adopting policies and programmes aimed at reducing smoking rates in society, which reflects its commitment to improving the health and quality of life of its community and raising awareness of the importance of staying away from this harmful habit.
