Sharjah 24: World Habitat Day, which is marked on the first Monday of October each year, is an important occasion to showcase the huge efforts made by Sharjah to improve the housing sector, services and facilities by providing safe and appropriate housing for citizens, and providing a number of smart services through Sharjah Housing Programme.
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah gave great importance to improving the housing sector in Sharjah, and was closely followed up by the Executive Council of the Emirate headed by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.
Since its establishment in 2012, Sharjah Housing Programme has mobilised all its energies to meet the housing needs, whereas it introduced a system of diverse options that serve different society segments applying for housing services, such as new house construction, home purchase, addition and maintenance.
The programme carried out multiple projects in the Emirate cities and regions. The residential complexes are distinguished by the diversity of their external facades to suit the tastes of the community and the needs of families. It is also working on several distinct projects with 15 residential projects in the next phase, such as the Al Harai Residential Complex Project (second phase), Al Nahwah Residential Complex in the city of Khorfakkan, and Al Suyoh Residential Complex (second phase), Al Gitanah residential complex in the city of Sharjah, and Al Saf residential complex (second phase) in the city of Kalba, in addition to other projects being implemented, such as the residential building complex on Al Hisn Island in the city of Dibba Al Hisn, the Al Qadisiyah complex in Khorfakkan, and other projects.
The programme's efforts over the past 10 years have been crowned with success. 11503 beneficiaries received housing support, with a total value exceeding 10 billion dirhams. The number of grants reached 5914, with a total value of 5.6 billion dirhams, while the number of loans reached 5589, with a total value of 4.3 billion dirhams, and 1,4523,622 beneficiaries were transferred from a loan to a grant.
Sharjah Housing Programme provided many housing services, as it provided a variety of free, modern designs for housing and residential annexes that were prepared by the programme and approved by the competent authorities, to be immediately implementable.
The "Isnaad" initiative was created to help beneficiaries who were unable to build and benefit from the housing support decision.
The "Isnaad" initiative has received great response from customers. The number of applications referred for the project has reached more than 920, while 382 completed projects have been delivered and 183 projects are being worked on at a total cost of 492 million dirhams. This confirms the combined efforts towards achieving the strategic goals and providing a decent living for families.
Green concrete has also been developed and adopted in construction as an environmentally friendly material alternative to cement. It reduces carbon emissions and increases the life of concrete structures.
The programme also provides rapid response to crises through the Temporary Housing Benefit, which provided 4,436 rental assistance to low-income people, rehabilitated and maintained burned-out housing, and enhanced family stability in the community. The “Hassantuk” fire warning sysem was also installed in 5426 homes in the Emirate of Sharjah.
The programme's efforts continue to apply the principles of continuous development and improvement to achieve the emirate’s vision of providing the best services to citizens, activating partnerships with the private sector, and providing sustainable solutions for housing support in accordance with the best international housing standards.
