Sharjah 24: Isatou Ceesay, a Gambian activist and social entrepreneur, popularly referred to as the Queen of Recycling came to Sharjah to attend the 12th edition of the International Government Communication Forum being organised at Expo Centre Sharjah by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau under the theme “Today’s Resources... Tomorrow’s Wealth”.
Speaking exclusively to “Sharjah 24”, Ceesay expressed her happiness to attend IGCF 2023, whereas she wanted to present herself, her activities, what she is doing in her country, how she started, why she started and where she is today.

Growing up on a farm in Gambia, she had to battle the challenges of being raised by her mother in a third-world environment. Due to her father's passing, as well as cultural limitations for women at the time, Ceesay was unable to complete a proper traditional education and was forced to drop out of school, for it was unaffordable at the time.

“I started when I was very young, and the reason why I started was because I landed from my mother. My father died when I was very young and my mother was definitely working so hard selling vegetables to be able to help me to go to school, and that is the time I believe women\ can make a difference”, Isatou said.

When Isatou was unable to continue her education, that was the very day she felt that she wanted to support women in general, and that was the time she set up this cooperation and used the environment as her illustrator to show people that women are together.

Isatou stated that “women are vulnerable but they are very committed to development, so coming together as women, can make a big difference”.

Isatou started an organization for recycling and preparing women entrepreneurs with 5 women, but today the organisaion serves thousands of women and kids with the environmental programme. She explained that the organisation aims to “make sure that the products women will be able to sell are the products they are making in their own way using their creativity to be able to have money and see how they can put that money to make their life grow. Know how they spend their money, to be able to keep something for tomorrow.”

Isatou concluded by saying that she was working with women, her work grows in her country and she wants to see it with other women in Sharjah.
