Sharjah24 - AFP: Tens of thousands of people thronged the town of Alappuzha in India's southern Kerala state to see the 69th edition of the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Saturday (August 12).
A total of 72 boats, including 19 snake boats, participated under nine categories in this year's race, local media reported, to compete for the coveted trophy.

Snake boats are traditional to the region and are so called for their long canoe-style shape.

The event is named after the first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru.

The annual event is held each August, and draws thousands of spectators from around the world.

This year the trophy was won by members of the Pallathuruthy Boat Club, local media reported.
