Sharjah24: "I waited for a whole year for this event". This is how renowned German photographer and author, Norbert Rosing, began a presentation titled ‘Dream On - My Life as a Nature Photographer’ at the 7th annual edition of the International Photography Festival ‘Xposure’ on Saturday (February 11), in Expo Centre Sharjah.
The wildlife and nature photographer told the audience about his chance entry into the world of photography when he was invited to join a photo tour of Africa in December 1992. From his first picture of polar bears in Churchill in the Canadian province of Manitoba in 1989, to the captivating image of a sleeping polar bear cub in Hudson Bay which became the National Geographic Magazine cover in 2000, the male nurse turned photographer shared his fascinating journey with the Xposure 2023 audience.

Rosing talked about the amount of patience it takes to be a successful nature photographer, adding that his determination enabled him to wait for days, and sometimes even years, to capture a wild animal in its natural habitat or a once-in-a-lifetime natural phenomenon.

On a visual journey, the session’s attendees walked through the photographer’s experiences of encountering danger in the wild, his close encounters with fascinating and even endangered species like walruses, arctic foxes, and polar bears in the harsh climate of the Canadian Arctic, when a few seconds decided whether he captured or lost an image forever.

The challenging environments and harsh, subzero climate in which Rosing had to spend days to photograph his wild subjects would end up giving him frost bites.

"When you see something extraordinary in nature, capture it immediately because you never know when you will find it again”, the photographer said as he highlighted his years of work photographing polar bears.”

“I wanted to do something others didn't do”, he continued, recalling a particular incident when he waited for five days in an igloo to get the perfect shot but couldn’t. So he returned again the following year.

Norbert Rosing's photography gives us a chance to see tough, unique terrains that many of us may not witness in person. From the wildlife of Yellowstone to the amazing colours and lights of Greenland, his repertoire of work is a celebration of life, and all its beauty and diversity.
