Images capture protest and jubilation at Xposure 2023 Sharjah

Sharjah24: Photographers Karen Zussman and Jeremy Sutton Hibbert take part in the international photography event " Xposure 20223," photographing people's festivities and demonstrations as well as their cultural traditions.
When George Floyd was shot and murdered by police in New York City, Karen Zisman presented "the Black Lives Matter" bicycle protest.  It was clear that she was a protester who was using a manual camera, therefore, she took all the photos from the seat of her bike.

At some point, she became very interested in the observers, particularly the children for whom the demonstrations would mean most, and this piqued her curiosity in my current project, Superpower of Me, in which I collaborate with kids on photography and poetry.

Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert, a photographer from Scotland in the United Kingdom, is thrilled to be a part of Xposure and to be able to record the celebrations and traditions of his own people.

The artwork he displays here, titled "Unsullied and Untarnished," is the result of a two-year project in which he documented Scottish festivals; the exhibition focuses on the deeply rooted customs celebrated during these celebrations.

The images depict a historic and traditional occasion. He felt that the festivals were genuine, unadulterated by commercialism or advertising, and a reflection of the culture of the locals; therefore, he decided to use that phrase to describe them.
