On arrival at the venue of the ceremony, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah was received by Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the Sharjah Art Foundation; Sheikh Salem bin Abdul Rahman Al Qasimi, Head of the Ruler’s Office; Sheikha Nawar bint Ahmed Al Qasimi, Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation; Abdullah Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Culture; Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA); Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, Head of the Protocol and Hospitality Department; Dr. Khalid Omar Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Media City "Shams"; and a number of senior government officials, representatives of diplomatic missions and a group of artists and participants.
Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi gave a speech in which she welcomed the guests and said that the ceremony of the Sharjah Film Platform is held to celebrate the artists and directors working in the independent cinema sector and the film industry. She added that this year’s edition of the Sharjah Film Platform has brought together more than 30 films reflecting new voices from the region and beyond in addition to the several dialogue sessions and qualitative initiatives and musical shows.
Addressing the platform’s goals and efforts over the past years, she said: “Since its launch in 2018, the Sharjah Film Platform has formed a supportive pillar for emerging artists and a destination for international filmmaking. The growing development achieved by the festival year after year is an indication of Sharjah Art Foundation's commitment to promoting cultural movement and supporting artists and workers in the creative and cinematic field in general.”
The President of the Sharjah Art Foundation concluded her speech thanking all those who contributed to the success of this year’s edition, including the winners and the winning films of the Platform Awards for 2022. She also thanked SAF’s partners.
Sean Murphy, Chargé d'Affaires at the United States Embassy in the UAE, gave a speech in which he thanked Sharjah Art Foundation for providing the opportunity to cooperate and participate in this major artistic event, praising the fruitful cooperation between the various institutions interested in the arts and cinema.
During his speech, he praised the unlimited interest of the Emirate of Sharjah in culture in various fields and work to advance the youth by organising many events and forums, making it a leading cultural city regionally and globally, and a permanent forum for exchanging experiences and developing talents.
Other partners and officials spoke at the event, and dealt with artistic and cinematic related topics and hailed SAF’s cooperation with their institutions in this area.
Then, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah honoured the winners of the awards of the fifth edition of the Sharjah Film Platform.
During the closing ceremony, a documentary film of the most prominent films participating in the fifth edition of the Sharjah Film Platform was screened.
