Sharjah24 - AFP: In their discussions on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden and Britain's incoming Prime Minister Rishi Sunak decided to collaborate in order to help Ukraine and confront China, according to the White House.
They first spoke a few hours after Liz Truss, Britain's third prime minister this year, resigned after just 49 days in office, leaving Sunak to inherit an economic disaster.
In a read-out of the call, the White House noted that the two leaders also underlined the "special connection" that exists between the United States and Britain and pledged to cooperate to enhance world security and prosperity.
Regarding the conflict started by Russia's invasion of its pro-Western neighbor in February, the leaders "agreed on the significance of working together to help Ukraine and hold Russia accountable for its aggression," according to the statement.
Biden and Sunak also agreed, according to the White House, to "address the challenges provided by China," which is currently seen as Washington's main geopolitical and economic opponent on the international arena.
The two "addressed the scope of UK-US collaboration, both bilaterally and in regions like the Indo-Pacific," as well as the more difficult matter of Northern Ireland," according to Downing Street's initial read-out of the call.
In a tweet earlier on Tuesday, Biden congratulated Sunak.
The appointment of Britain's first non-white prime minister, according to Biden, was "quite astounding, a momentous milestone," on Monday.
The Ukrainian military is being armed and supported by Britain, a crucial European partner of the United States, as it attempts to fend off the Russian invasion that started in February.
