Sharjah24 - AFP: Several civilians have been killed and numerous others injured in recent skirmishes between the army and M23 rebels in eastern DR Congo, according to officials.
The M23, a predominantly Congolese Tutsi organization, started fighting again in late 2021 after a protracted period of inactivity. Since then, it has seized large portions of the North Kivu region of the Central African nation, including the vital town of Bunagana on the Ugandan border in June.
The town of Ntamugenga in North Kivu's Rutshuru region, a crucial target that is near to the highway going north out of the provincial capital Goma, was reportedly taken over by M23 rebels on Sunday, according to army authorities and locals.
Regional ties in central Africa have become unstable as a result of the group's rebirth, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo accusing its smaller neighbor Rwanda of supporting the militia.
The frontline between M23 insurgents and Congolese troops had been quiet lately. However, violence watchdog Kivu Security Tracker reported late Saturday that fighting broke out once more on Thursday.
According to Congo's army, combat on the route around Ntamugenga resulted in three civilian deaths and 35 injuries, while on a different front to the north, one person was killed and five others were hurt.
