Sharjah 24 – WAM: The Secretary-General of Muslim Council of Elders Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam met with the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund Natalia Kanem.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed matters related to combatting violence against women and children globally.
Kanem praised the Muslim Council of Elders' efforts under the chairmanship of the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb in supporting women's rights as well as combatting sexual violence and protecting the right of females to education and equality. The Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund also praised the Document on Human Fraternity as well as Al Azhar's permanent cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund for their role in supporting such important causes.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders reaffirmed his organisation's commitment to supporting women's causes as well as combatting all forms of discrimination and violence against women, as per the teachings of Islam. Judge Abdelsalam pointed to the Document on Human Fraternity as a charter which clearly upholds the rights of all women whilst encouraging the amendment of laws and legislations around the world that limit women's rights and negatively affect their dignity.
Judge Abdelsalam is currently in the United States where he also took part in the "Building Interreligious Solidarity" conference held at Georgetown University, in partnership with the Muslim Council of Elders and the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity.
