Sharjah 24 – Reuters: Four students at The American University in Cairo have developed cement capable of absorbing energy from the sun and lighting up in the dark.
It was developed by four Egyptian students in a bid to produce a sustainable construction material.

Zainab Mahmoud, Student, at The American University in Cairo said, “The self-luminous concrete is just ordinary concrete, but it has some additions that give it the option to glow, so this concrete has the ability, in the presence of sunlight or light in general, to store the light and when the light is gone, it self-illuminates.”

The students say their research could reduce reliance on electricity used to light up highways and long stretches of roads.

Mohamed Nagib Abou-Zeid, Professor of Construction, at The American University in Cairo said, “This kind of research strongly serves the global direction. The picture we’re getting these days about climate change is scary, so this is just one part of many efforts in this field. This research in particular is a step forward in the direction of producing environment-friendly construction material that does not consume electricity, does not emit carbon dioxide or harmful gases to the environment contributing to climate change.”
