Sharjah24 – Reuters: Russia played host to the 2022 International Economic Forum of the Amber Industry, Amberforum, on June 16-19 in Svetlogorsk in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
The highlights of the forum were two auctions which saw 80 items going under the hammer.
The lots fetched around 21 million roubles ($380,000) in total, according to forum organisers - higher than the estimate.
Many of the lots weighed over a kilogram; the most expensive one, weighing 1.3 kilograms, was sold for 1,640,000 roubles (around $30,000), according to Russia's TASS news agency.
Along with Russians, buyers from Lithuania, Armenia, Hong Kong, Serbia, Turkey and China participated in the auctions.
Kaliningrad region is an isolated Russian exclave - sandwiched between EU and NATO members Poland and Lithuania - which is thought to hold over 90% of the world's reserves of the kind of amber found here.
Most of the amber is quarried near the town of Yantarny - which means 'made of amber' in Russian.
