Sharjah24 - Reuters: The cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States exceeded 78.47 million on Sunday, with the death toll topping 935,000, according to the latest data released by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
Specifically, the country's case count had risen to 78,476,751 with a death toll of 935,331 as of 18:21 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Sunday.
The United States continues to lead the world in both confirmed COVID-19 cases and related fatalities, with over one fifth of its population falling victim to the virus.
There have been more than one million excess deaths in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Guardian said in a recent report.
The deaths are mainly attributable to COVID-19, as well as conditions that may have resulted from delayed medical care and overwhelmed health systems, the report quoted figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as saying.
At least 923,000 Americans have died from confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to the U.S. CDC. Other causes of death above the normally expected number include heart disease, hypertension and Alzheimer's disease.
