Sharjah24 – Reuters: The cumulative total of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States had exceeded 51.8 million as of Thursday, with the death toll surpassing 813,000, according to the latest data released by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
Specifically, the country's case count rose to 51,802,734 as of 19:21 Eastern Standard Time (EST) Thursday, while the death toll reached 813,991, according to the CSSE tally.
At present, many hospitals in the United States are under severe pressure from the Omicron and Delta variants, with medical staff in a state of exhaustion.
Data from the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) shows that there were over 70,000 hospitalised cases of COVID-19 across the country as of Thursday.
According to the New York Times, the average new daily number of hospitalized COVID-19 cases in the country exceeded 69,000 in the week ending Wednesday, an increase of 11 percent in two weeks. The District of Columbia saw the fastest increase of 64 percent, followed by 58 percent in Connecticut, 56 percent in New Hampshire, and 40 percent in New York State.
The proportion of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients across the country is currently as high as 87.1 percent, and hospitals in most states are operating at full capacity.
