Sharjah 24 – WAM: The UAE and the German federal state of Bavaria have agreed to cooperate in tackling climate change and protecting the environment.
In this context, Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, and Roland Weigert, Bavaria’s Vice Minister of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, signed a joint declaration of intent during the visit of the Bavarian delegation to the UAE.
In the document, the UAE and Bavaria express the intention to explore synergies in the areas of climate neutrality, waste management and circular economy, air pollution control, food waste management, wastewater treatment and groundwater technologies, and green hydrogen. Taking place in close coordination with the Emirati-German Energy Partnership, launched in 2017, the cooperation aims to engage the public and private sectors as well as academia.
A joint working group has been established to identify concrete projects and actions to implement the declaration. The group comprises representatives of the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, and the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection.
Almheiri said, "The UAE and Bavaria share a history of rising to developed economies, as well as a firm commitment to sustainable development that enables us to preserve our precious natural resources for future generations. In addition, Germany is one of the UAE’s strategic partners in the field of energy. Therefore, we can both benefit from one another’s experience and expertise."
She added, "We look forward to working together with Bavaria to translate our respective climate neutrality ambitions into reality, pursue a pathway to a low-carbon economy, advance the energy transition, and embrace innovative technologies. I am confident that stepping up our collaboration will enable us both to become stronger and better equipped to face current and future challenges."
For his part, Weigert said, "I am very pleased to expand the stable partnership between Bavaria and the UAE with Minister Mariam Almheiri. The agreement underlines the intention of both states to cooperate closely in tackling global challenges, such as climate change, a secure water and food supply, or the transformation towards a sustainable economy. We share the conviction that this transformation holds enormous opportunities to accelerate innovation and achieve economic and ecological progress. That is why we have defined the strategic future fields of our cooperation in the declaration."
He added, "Bavaria and the UAE can benefit greatly from the partnership. We want to bring companies together, initiate research cooperation, and expand bilateral trade."
The declaration complements and strengthens the existing cooperation between the UAE and Germany in the fields of energy, climate, and hydrogen.
