This came as Sheikh Mohamed received a delegation from the Special Olympics UAE at Qasr Al Bahr Palace and hailed the efforts made by every and each one who contributed to getting the Grant, which the world's Special Olympics awards to the countries that implement its Healthy Communities Programme.
"Ensuring the wellbeing of our People of Determination and providing them with comprehensive care in line with the highest international standards lies at the heart of the UAE's plans and programmes to empower them and ensure their effective contributions to the country's development," Sheikh Mohamed told the delegation.
The accolade comes in recognition of the Special Olympics UAE's commitment to improving the quality of life for People of Determination, making the UAE the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region to receive this grant during its first year of implementing the programme.
Special Olympics UAE's mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics provides opportunities to develop physical fitness, social skills, and participation among other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Commenting on the recognition, Shamma bint Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, said, "One of the significant outcome achieved following the organistion of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, is to promote a comprehensive and sustainable community movement in all fields to integrate people of determination and people with intellectual disabilities."
