Sharjah24 – Reuters: Bolivia's health system is under strain from a rising number of COVID-19 cases, with the South American country tracking an average of some 11,000 new infections over the past week.
Outside of an El Alto hospital, mother of four Otilia Polloquery is awaiting news on her husband's condition after he was admitted following COVID-19 related complications.

"He just breathes from one lung. He doesn't breathe well. Only one lung is functioning, the other is damaged. He's in a bad state. I want him to get better. I have four children," said Polloquery.

Bolivia ranks in the bottom half of nations in Latin America for its vaccination rollout. According to official statistics, about 43% of the population is fully vaccinated.

The new wave of infections is sparking concerns in Bolivia of a worsening pandemic. In Cochabamba the body of a 60-year-old found in the street was reportedly positive for COVID-19. Officials have not confirmed if the cause of death was coronavirus related.

Bolivia has so far recorded nearly 800,000 COVID-19 cases and some 20,000 deaths.
