Sharjah24 – Reuters: Fan frenzy reached pre-pandemic levels in London's Leicester Square on Monday (October 18) as the stars of "Dune" appeared on the red carpet for the film's UK premiere.
Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya star in the hotly anticipated film, alongside a stellar cast including Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgard and Josh Brolin.
Hundreds of fans crowded around the red carpet and behind barriers to catch a glimpse of Chalamet and his co-stars, most screaming as they held up their phones, some shedding tears.
The film is adapted to the screen by Canadian director Denis Villeneuve from Frank Herbert's epic 1965 science fiction novel "Dune". It is set in the future where noble families rule planetary fiefs. Chalamet plays lead character Paul Atreides, whose father Duke Leto Atreides (Isaac) takes on the stewardship of the remote planet Arrakis.
Known as Dune to its native Fremen people, Arrakis is hotly contested for its lucrative spice, a unique and highly-desired commodity found in its desert where temperatures soar and giant sandworms prey.
The two-and-a-half-hour movie, described as part one of the story, is Chalamet's biggest project to date. He said he was so keen to feature in the film that he set up Google alerts for Villeneuve and "Dune" when he heard that the filmmaker was planning on making the movie.
With sweeping landscapes and dark mood, critics have lauded this film as a visual spectacle in reviews.
Villeneuve said bringing the movie out in 2021 was timely.
"Dune", which is already out in select countries, opens in UK and U.S. cinemas on October 21 and 22 respectively.
