Paris summit urges lifting patents to let Africa produce vaccines

May 19, 2021 / 7:25 AM
Sharjah24 – AFP: At a Paris summit seeking to boost financing in Africa amid the Covid-19 pandemic, French President Emmanuel Macron voices the summit's call for vaccine patents to be lifted to allow vaccinations to be manufactured on the continent.
Emmanuel Macron, President of France said, "Our will is to help Africa massively equip itself, through technological partnerships, through financing that will be mobilized in particular through the World Bank, and through two things that we have agreed upon today, that we support: technology transfer, and work that has been requested from the WHO (World Health Organization, ed), the WTO (World Trade Organization, ed), and the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) to remove all constraints in terms of intellectual property, which blocks the production of certain types of vaccines in Africa. And so during this epidemic, we need to remove all constraints, whether they are intellectual property ones, funding ones or technology transfer ones. That's key, because there will be variants."
