Sharjah 24: His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah and Director General of Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST), confirmed that the first day of the holy month of Ramadan, astronomically, falls on Tuesday, April 13, and the first day of Shawwal, Thursday, May 13.
His Excellency pointed out the importance of the SAASST’s organisation to the astronomical forum to determine the beginnings of the Hijri months, especially the months of Ramadan and Shawwal for the Hijri year 1442.

His Excellency stated to "Sharjah 24", that the forum includes a large number of specialists from Sharia and astronomers aiming to determine the beginnings of these months, indicating that these months are legally and astronomically determined in accordance with the Qur’anic verses and the hadiths reported from the Prophet, peace be upon him.

His Excellency highlighted that the forum included a number of astronomical and legal lectures to determine the beginnings of the Hijri months, especially the months of Ramadan and Shawwal for the year 1442.

His Excellency revealed that the forum concluded with important results, from the astronomical point of view, and according to careful studies in this field, that the first day of the holy month of Ramadan is next Tuesday, corresponding to April 13, 2021, and the first day of the month of Shawwal falls on Thursday, corresponding to May 13, 2021.

His Excellency added that the entity authorised to announce the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan is the committee in charge of investigating the crescent of the blessed month of Ramadan in the country, headed by the Minister of Justice. His Excellency maintained that the role of astronomers and researchers in this field is to provide the committee with accurate astronomical studies to take decisions in this regard.
