Sharjah 24: Under the theme “Empower Parents … Enable Breastfeeding”, the Friends of Breastfeeding Association (FBA) of the Health Education Department at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs is observing the National Breastfeeding Week (November 6 – 14) through a series of activities to raise mothers’ awareness about the significance of breastfeeding and increase its rates, so as to maintain the health of the mother and child and achieve a healthy and disease-free society.
A number of educational lectures and awareness initiatives were held in a number of hospitals and health centers across the country including Wasit, Khalidiya, Al Dhaid Health Centers, Kalba Hospital in Sharjah, Sheikh Khalifa Hospital in Ajman, Latifa Hospital in Dubai, where health educators and specialists gave presentations on the importance of breastfeeding and its role in maintaining mothers and children’s health.

Also, free checkups were provided for mothers at Maternity departments at the University and Zulekha Hospitals in Sharjah, in addition to handing out awareness leaflets on the benefits of breastfeeding and Friends of Breastfeeding Association’s initiatives.

In addition, the Association was keen on holding special activities for working mothers at their workplaces, where awareness lectures were organized at Al Itqan American School and Wasit Nursery in Sharjah.

Increasing Breastfeeding Rates
Speaking on the importance of the event, Eng. Khawla Al Noman, Head of Breastfeeding Friends Association, said: “The wise vision of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs has been always our guide to improve the physical and mental health of children through several activities aiming to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding.”

“The National Breastfeeding Week is one of the important annual events organized by the Association, where the awareness and educational lectures held collaboratively with government institutions, hospitals, and health centers are forming a perfect opportunity for mothers in the UAE to learn more about breastfeeding benefits.,” added Al Noman.

She pointed out the visits conducted by the Association to mothers at their workplaces and hospitals are constituting an important platform for addressing difficulties and the psychological and health issues mothers face.

The Association will be continuing its events and activities on the sidelines of the National Breastfeeding Week by visiting about 18 hospitals and health centers from public and private sectors including; Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah, Amina Hospital and Mushairef Health Center in Ajman, Al Faisal Health Center in Fujairah, Jumanah Nursery in Khorfakkan, Orchard Nursery in Sharjah, where several activities will be held including awareness platforms, educational lectures, and contests for children.

Since its inception in 2004 under the patronage of the Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, the Friends of Breastfeeding Association is striving to improve the physical and psychological health of children and mothers by increasing breastfeeding, which is regarded as the best way to form a healthy family relationship and to achieve a safe community.
