Sharjah24 – Reuters: A Frida Kahlo self-portrait currently on display in Hong Kong could become the most expensive Latin American artwork ever sold at public auction internationally when it goes under the hammer on November 16, auction house Sotheby's said.
Kahlo's "Diego y yo" will be auctioned off this autumn as a star lot at the Sotheby's Modern Evening Sale in New York, where the sales price is estimated at USD$30 million or higher.
Completed in 1949, the artwork is a powerful example of Kahlo's iconic self-portraits. The artwork was made at a tumultuous time in Kahlo's personal life, Anna Di Stasi, Sotheyby's Director of Latin American Art told Reuters on Saturday (October 9).
Sotheby's said the portrait was a rare opportunity for collectors as Mexico's strict national patrimony laws prohibit most famous works of art from being exported. Diego y yo was brought out of Mexico before the promulgation of national patrimony laws, as Kahlo gifted the painting to a personal friend overseas shortly after its completion.
