Sharjah24: Jürgen Klopp secured his first victory since taking charge of the Germany national team as the “Mannschaft” beat visitors Serbia 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in Munich in the third round of Group B in League A of the Nations League.

The victory came in Klopp’s third match in charge. Germany drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in his first game before suffering a surprise 1-0 defeat by Greece.

The German coach made sweeping changes to his line-up against Serbia, handing goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and winger Derry Scherhant their international debuts.

Germany enjoyed almost complete control in the first half, ending it with 16 attempts to Serbia’s none. Tom Bischof turned that dominance into a goal in the 39th minute, following up on the rebound after Florian Wirtz’s shot struck the post to put the hosts ahead before the break.

Florian Wirtz continued to impress after half-time, scoring Germany’s second in the 61st minute following a pass from Maximilian Mittelstädt. Wirtz outplayed the defender before finding the net to seal Germany’s first victory in the current edition of the competition.

In the group’s other match, the Netherlands, coached by Spaniard Xavi Hernández, avoided defeat against hosts Greece, coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 at the Toumba Stadium in Thessaloniki.

Greece took the lead through Fotis Ioannidis in the 23rd minute, before substitute Giorgos Masouras added a second in the second minute of first-half stoppage time to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at the interval.

The Netherlands turned the game around after the break, with captain Virgil van Dijk reducing the deficit with a header in the 59th minute. Substitute Tijjani Reijnders then struck an 89th-minute equaliser to spare the Dutch defeat and earn them a valuable point away from home.

Following these results, Greece remained top of the group on seven points, with the Netherlands second, while Germany secured their first win in the competition under Klopp.
