Sharjah24-AFP: A Grade 10 student was shot dead at a high school in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, before the alleged attacker took his own life, according to police.

The shooting took place at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, a Catholic private university in western Mindanao.

Regional police said a ninth-grade student brought a pistol and a rifle onto the school campus and opened fire in a classroom, killing one student before turning the gun on himself.

Police spokeswoman Shella Chang said authorities were still investigating the motive and processing the crime scene.

The number of people injured was unclear at first.

The university confirmed the two fatalities and said it had coordinated with parents and guardians to collect their children, while ensuring the safety of those remaining on campus.

The incident was the country's second school shooting in two months. In June, three teenage students were killed and 20 others were wounded in a shooting in central Philippines.

School shootings are rare in the Philippines, where legal gun ownership is tightly regulated, although illegal firearms remain widely available.
