Sharjah 24: The UAE national wheelchair basketball 3x3 team has achieved its strongest result in the history of its participation in the Asia-Oceania Championship (AOC), finishing fourth at the tournament in Shanghai, China.

The competition was held from 13 to 17 August, with the UAE side reaching the semi-finals after a series of competitive performances against some of the leading teams in the region.

The team will now turn its attention to the next major challenge, the World Wheelchair Basketball 3x3 Championship, which is scheduled to take place in Cairo, Egypt, from 19 to 23 November.

Strong showing earns praise

Speaking after welcoming the delegation at Dubai International Airport on Monday, Dhaiban Salem Al Muhairi, Secretary-General of the National Paralympic Committee, praised the players for their performances throughout the tournament.

He said the team produced strong displays and achieved competitive results that saw it break into the top four despite facing tough opposition from some of Asia's leading national teams.

Al Muhairi also conveyed the appreciation of Mohammed Fadel Al Hameli, President of the National Paralympic Committee, to the players for their efforts and to the technical and administrative staff for their work throughout the campaign.

He added that reaching the semi-finals and securing fourth place reflected the steady progress being made by wheelchair basketball in the UAE.

The result provides further encouragement for the national team as it prepares for its appearance at the World Wheelchair Basketball 3x3 Championship in Cairo later this year.
