Sharjah 24: The annual Al-Balda Festival in the Yemeni coastal city of Mukalla has attracted large crowds from across the country and abroad. The festival combines cultural celebrations, heritage performances, and tourism activities in Hadramawt Governorate, taking place amid pleasant and cooler weather during this time of year.

Yemenis have gathered in Mukalla to participate in the annual Al-Balda Festival, which brings together cultural events, traditional performances, and tourist activities across the Hadramawt Governorate.

Mohammed Ahmed said, “These days, we are experiencing wonderful weather in Mukalla during the Al-Balda season. The numbers are huge, participation is very strong, the weather is cool, the city is lively, and tourism activity is always high.”

An annual phenomenon known locally as "Najm Al-Balda"

The seasonal celebration coincides with an annual natural phenomenon known locally as “Najm Al-Balda,” when deep ocean waters rise as warm surface waters are pushed away from the coast by currents. The process brings colder water from the depths, cooling the coastline and attracting thousands of visitors to Mukalla in eastern Yemen.

Heritage, dances, and celebrations

Amin Bashrahil said residents welcome the cooler sea conditions after experiencing periods of intense heat. He added that the season is accompanied by various celebrations and festivals that highlight local heritage through traditional dances and cultural activities.

The month-long festival has grown from a local gathering into a major event attracting visitors from across Yemen and beyond. It features beach activities, folklore performances, and markets showcasing the region’s traditions and customs.

Boosting the economy of Hadramawt Governorate

Majdi Bashadi, Director of the Hadramawt Tourism Office, said the festival contributes to strengthening the governorate’s economy.

He said, “The 2026 Town Season Tourism Festival is an economic boost for the governorate. This year, after forming the festival committee, we ensured the organization of high-quality events with a focus on culture, heritage, and tourism.”

Visitors to the exhibition can explore collections of traditional household items, historical clothing, textiles, and artifacts reflecting Hadramawt’s rich history and cultural heritage.
