In conclusions issued after their summit in Brussels on 18th and 19th June, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting security, stability and peace in the Middle East and called for stronger diplomatic efforts to address regional crises.
EU welcomes US-Iran agreement
The European Council welcomed the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important opportunity to strengthen regional stability and ensure freedom of navigation and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Council also praised diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement and commended the mediation roles of Pakistan, Qatar and other regional partners.
On Iran, the EU reiterated its opposition to Tehran acquiring nuclear weapons and called for full compliance with nuclear obligations, renewed cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and an end to activities it considers destabilising.
Gaza, West Bank and Lebanon in focus
European leaders expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank, urging Israel to allow the immediate delivery of aid, reopen crossings and enable humanitarian organisations to operate independently.
The EU reaffirmed its support for a two-state solution and called for implementation of relevant UN resolutions to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace. It also condemned settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank.
Regarding Lebanon, the European Council voiced concern over continued ceasefire violations and called on all parties to exercise restraint and pursue a lasting political solution. The EU condemned attacks by Hezbollah against Israel, called for the group's disarmament, and urged Israel to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and withdraw from Lebanese territory in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The Council reaffirmed support for Lebanese institutions, particularly the Lebanese Armed Forces, and stressed the importance of continued coordination with regional and international partners to promote security, stability and sustainable peace across the Middle East.
