Sharjah 24 – WAM: The European Union’s landmark Pact on Migration and Asylum is set to officially enter into force this Friday across all member states. This implementation marks the final realisation of a major, comprehensive overhaul of the bloc’s migration system, which was formally adopted in May 2024.

The new legislative framework introduces standardised, common rules governing border management, asylum procedures, reception standards, and responsibility-sharing among member nations to ensure a unified European response.

The core measures of the pact include the mandatory registration and comprehensive security screening of all irregular arrivals, alongside fast-track processing for specific asylum claims and standardised, binding deadlines for rendering decisions. Furthermore, the pact introduces targeted protocols aimed at significantly reducing the secondary movement of asylum seekers between member states, supported by a new, permanent solidarity mechanism designed to provide equitable assistance to frontline countries experiencing acute migration pressure.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen lauded the milestone, describing the newly active pact as an effective, fair, and firm system. She emphasised that the comprehensive framework is strategically designed to fortify the European Union's external borders while simultaneously fostering deeper cooperation, structural fairness, and long-term procedural efficiency across the entire bloc.
