Von der Leyen: too early to ease sanctions

Speaking in Berlin, she stated that European sanctions were originally imposed due to what she described as human rights violations in Iran, including issues related to fundamental freedoms and women’s rights.

Human rights concerns remain central

She underlined that lifting sanctions is not possible at this stage, emphasising that the European Union must first see a genuine shift in the behaviour and policies of the Iranian authorities before considering any relaxation of the measures.
