Sharjah24: At the 10th edition of the Xposure International Photography Festival, veteran, award-winning photojournalist and documentary filmmaker Brian Skerry presented a powerful, immersive, and emotionally resonant body of work that brings the hidden underwater world vividly to the surface. Known for his long-standing dedication to marine wildlife and ocean conservation, Skerry is showcasing his striking exhibition, "The Sentient Sea", a deeply reflective visual journey spanning decades of exploration across the world’s oceans.

In an exclusive interview with "Sharjah24", Skerry described the exhibition as a carefully curated, story-driven collection of images drawn from multiple field assignments and long-term documentary projects. Each photograph, he explained, represents a distinct, real-world story — captured through patience, risk, and scientific awareness — yet together they form a cohesive, thought-provoking narrative about the living, breathing intelligence of the ocean.

He stressed that Earth is fundamentally an “ocean planet,” despite humanity’s land-based perspective. “We tend to think of ourselves as land creatures,” he said, “but we live on an ocean world — a rare, extraordinary, and possibly unique environment in our solar system, and perhaps even in the universe.”

Skerry emphasised that compelling, human-centred storytelling is far more impactful than abstract environmental statistics alone. People, he noted, are naturally responsive, emotional, and story-oriented. Strong visual storytelling allows audiences to see themselves inside the narrative, transforming distant environmental issues into personal, relatable, and urgent realities.

Through dramatic, intimate, and visually rich underwater imagery, Skerry aims to build empathy, awareness, and responsibility — proving that authentic visual stories can move hearts as well as minds.
