The German champions credited their success to English international Harry Kane, who rediscovered his scoring touch after failing to net in Bayern’s 3–0 Bundesliga victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach last Saturday. Kane scored twice in the 38th and 64th minutes, following an opening goal from Colombian winger Luis Díaz (36’), while Frenchman Michael Olise (72’) secured the convincing win. Kane’s hat-trick brought his total to 22 goals in 14 matches this season — including 12 in the Bundesliga, five in the Champions League, four in the domestic cup, and one in the Super Cup. With this result, Bayern broke AC Milan’s long-standing record of 13 consecutive wins at the start of a season, set under Fabio Capello during the 1992–1993 campaign.
Defending champions VfB Stuttgart began their campaign with a 2–0 victory over Mainz, with goals from Swiss defender Luca Jaquier (6’) and Turkish midfielder Atakan Karazor (73’). Stuttgart won the trophy last season for the fourth time, first since 1997, beating second-tier Arminia Bielefeld 4–2 in the final. Bielefeld’s 2025 run ended after a 2–1 extra-time defeat to Union Berlin. Leopold Querfeld (11’) and Danilho Doekhi (106’) scored for Union, with Thaddäus-Mungou Momuloh (27’) netting Bielefeld’s only goal.
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen, two-time winners of the German Cup (1993 and 2024), needed extra time to overcome second-division side Paderborn, eventually winning 4–2 despite Paderborn being reduced to 10 men.
