The restructuring seeks to improve efficiency across the company’s AI projects while maintaining momentum in its most ambitious research and product endeavours. The decision takes place amid a broader realignment of resources as Meta continues to strengthen its position in the competitive AI landscape.
The job cuts will not affect Meta’s TBD Lab, a division set up by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to promote AI innovations. The lab rapidly expanded by recruiting leading researchers from top technology companies like OpenAI and Apple, offering competitive pay packages to attract world-class talent.
According an American newspaper, the layoffs mainly affect AI product and infrastructure teams, with some impacted employees likely to be redeployed to other departments within Meta rather than being completely laid off.
The New York Times reported that the restructuring is part of Meta’s plan to tackle “organisational bloat”, which has arisen from rapid and large-scale hiring efforts to develop its AI capabilities in recent years. The move demonstrates Meta’s increasing emphasis on agility and faster decision-making within its technical and research divisions.
In an internal memo quoted by both newspapers, Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang stated that the job cuts are intended to streamline internal processes, noting that the change will result in “fewer conversations will be required to make a decision.”
Although layoffs are part of operational tightening, Meta continues to invest heavily in AI-driven technologies, including generative AI models, content moderation tools, and advertising systems. The company’s strategy aims to balance cost efficiency with ongoing innovation, ensuring it remains competitive in a swiftly evolving industry dominated by players such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
Meta has not issued an official public comment in response to media inquiries about the layoffs.
