Powerful tornado north of Paris kills one, injures several

The town of Ermont, about 20 kilometres (13 miles) north-east of the French capital, was identified as the epicentre of the rare meteorological phenomenon, which caused chaos across ten neighbouring areas.

Eyewitnesses described the tornado as a fierce whirlwind that appeared seemingly out of nowhere, striking with devastating force.

Fatalities and widespread damage

According to Regional Prosecutor Guirec Le Bras, the tornado caused catastrophic damage at a construction site, where a 23-year-old construction worker was killed as three cranes collapsed during the storm.

Alongside the fatality, ten individuals were injured, with four in critical condition, prompting an immediate emergency response from local services.

The fierce winds tore roofs from buildings and damaged homes and infrastructure, leaving visible scars on Ermont and nearby communities.

Authorities describe the event as “Rare Intensity”

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the storm as a weather event of “rare intensity”, emphasising the seriousness of the situation and the urgency of the government’s response.

Social media rapidly flooded with videos of the tornado’s aftermath, showing cranes collapsing one after another. One crane hit the side of a clinic, miraculously causing no injuries, while another collided with a residential building, raising fears of additional casualties.

Emergency services mobilised

In the aftermath, firefighters, police, and medical teams hurried to the scene to rescue victims, evaluate structural damage, and secure affected areas.

Local authorities are now concentrating on recovery and rebuilding efforts, striving to restore normalcy in communities profoundly impacted by the disaster.
