Sharjah24 - AFP: The United Nations said on Sunday that Huthi rebels in Yemen are holding 20 of its staff members following a raid on its compound in Sanaa a day earlier. According to the UN office in Yemen, Huthi security forces entered the organisation’s premises without authorisation, detaining five national staff and fifteen international employees.

The UN said it is in contact with authorities in Sanaa, member states, and the Yemeni government to secure the release of its personnel and regain control of the facility. Among those detained is believed to be UNICEF’s representative in Yemen, Peter Hawkins, according to UN and Huthi sources.

The incident follows earlier detentions of UN and NGO staff in Huthi-controlled areas, with the group previously accusing aid workers of espionage for the United States and Israel. Yemen’s conflict has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
