Tributes flooded in from across the world. Donatella Versace said, “The world lost a giant today.” Julia Roberts called him “a true friend,” while Claudia Cardinale shared, “My heart is broken.” Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala announced a public mourning day, with the funeral to be held Monday.
Although the funeral will be private, the public can pay respects in Milan over the weekend. Armani, affectionately called “Il Signor Armani” by colleagues, was praised for working tirelessly until his final days.
Armani founded his label in 1975, revolutionized red-carpet fashion, and expanded into Emporio Armani and luxury hotels. Despite recent health setbacks that caused him to miss fashion events in Milan and Paris, he continued to oversee operations remotely.
His passing comes just before the brand's 50th anniversary. In a recent interview, Armani hinted at a planned transition to trusted family members and Leo Dell'Orco, his longtime collaborator and head of men’s design.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed Armani as “a symbol of Italy at its best.” On Instagram, the brand posted a final quote from the designer: "The mark I hope to leave is one of commitment, respect, and genuine care for people and for reality."
