Sharjah 24: Italian luxury furniture makers, gathered this week at the Milan Furniture Fair, are feeling the pressure of new US tariffs imposed under President Donald Trump’s trade policy. With the United States representing Italy’s second-largest market for furniture exports after France, the impact is being closely watched across the industry.

In 2024, the US accounted for €2.2 billion of the sector’s €19.4 billion in exports. The newly introduced 20-percent tariffs on EU products have sparked concerns of long-term damage, with industry leaders warning of a significant downturn in trade. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is scheduled to travel to Washington on 17 April in an effort to mitigate the fallout.

Some furniture firms are attempting to remain optimistic. Companies like La Contessina and Villari are highlighting their resilience, citing past survival through the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of Russian markets due to the war in Ukraine. Many are hoping that continued demand from the Middle East and brand loyalty in the US will help cushion the blow.

However, this year's fair has seen a noticeable decline in American visitors, who were previously a major presence. Interior designers express concern over losing clients and frustration with the new tariffs’ effect on cross-border creative collaboration.

Last year’s slump in exports to France and Germany had already contributed to a 2.1 percent decline in industry revenues, totalling €27.5 billion. While emerging markets like the UAE and Saudi Arabia offer some promise, they are not yet strong enough to offset losses in traditional markets.

At the 63rd Salone del Mobile, sustainability and nature-inspired design dominate the trends, with many clients leaning towards warm, natural tones and a blending of artistic and functional design. The fair features over 2,100 exhibitors and remains a global showcase for Italian craftsmanship.
