Since taking office, US President Donald Trump has pushed for the United States to gain control over Greenland, calling it necessary for "international security." This proposal has drawn significant attention from Russia, which views it as a potential threat to regional stability.
Speaking at an Arctic forum in Murmansk, Putin emphasized that this was not just an extravagant notion but a serious and longstanding plan from the US. He acknowledged that while Russia was not directly involved in the question of Greenland's ownership, Moscow remained concerned about NATO countries using the Arctic for possible conflicts.
Greenland, which is seeking independence from Denmark, is already home to a US military base, and US Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to visit the island soon. Its strategic location between North America and Europe has become even more important as sea lanes in the Arctic open up due to climate change, attracting growing interest from the US, China, and Russia.
Despite Trump's calls, Denmark has firmly rejected the idea of the US taking over Greenland, pointing out that the people of Greenland have expressed their desire not to become part of the United States.
