The crash, the deadliest in Bolivia so far this year, happened on a narrow two-way road early Saturday morning. One of the buses was traveling to the Oruro Carnival, a major event in Latin America attracting tens of thousands of visitors.
While the exact cause of the collision remains unclear, police reported that one of the buses had veered into the opposite lane. Additionally, one of the drivers, who survived but is in critical condition, was found to have "alcohol breath," prompting a blood test.
Bolivia’s mountain roads are known for their perilous conditions, with road accidents claiming an average of 1,400 lives annually in the country.
