In addition to the two seriously injured officers, three others sustained lighter injuries. The suspect, who is on France's terror prevention watchlist (FSPRT), is believed to have targeted the police during the demonstration. One officer suffered a carotid artery injury, while another was wounded in the thorax.
The suspect, born in Algeria, has been under judicial supervision, house arrest, and an expulsion order from France. Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential terror attack.
The national anti-terror prosecutors unit (PNAT) has taken charge of the investigation. Mulhouse’s mayor, Michele Lutz, described the incident as a horrifying event, and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is expected to visit the scene later on Saturday.
