Sharjah24: Liverpool has booked its place in the English League Cup final with a commanding 4-0 victory over Tottenham in the second leg of their semi-final clash.
Having lost the first leg 1-0 in London, Liverpool triumphed 4-1 on aggregate to secure their final spot.
Newcastle, on the other hand, made their way to the final after defeating Arsenal 2-0 on aggregate, and they will face Liverpool on March 16.
Although Liverpool had a goal ruled out in the 30th minute when Dominik Szoboszlai’s strike was deemed offside, the hosts quickly bounced back. Just four minutes later, Cody Gakpo put Liverpool ahead, finishing off a brilliant cross from Mohamed Salah.
Tottenham’s troubles deepened when Brazilian forward Richarlison was forced off with an injury before halftime, replaced by French newcomer Matthias Tell from Bayern Munich.
Six minutes into the second half, Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead with a coolly taken penalty, before Szoboszlai sealed the win in the 76th minute, netting a well-placed pass from Conor Bradley.
The final blow came from Virgil van Dijk, who rose highest to head in a corner from Alexis Mac Allister, ensuring a dominant 4-0 victory.
This marks Liverpool’s 15th League Cup final appearance, having lifted the trophy 10 times, most recently last season, with four final losses to their name.
Meanwhile, Tottenham’s woes continue as they languish in 14th place in the league, while Liverpool, atop the standings, are flourishing under the guidance of Dutch manager Arne Slot, who joined this season after a successful stint at Feyenoord Rotterdam.
