Sharjah 24 – AFP: On Friday, the United States announced the approval of a $3.6 billion sale to Japan, which includes up to 1,200 advanced air-to-air missiles and related equipment.

Strengthening security ties amid regional tensions

China's growing assertiveness in disputed Pacific territories has prompted Japan to strengthen its security alliances, particularly with the United States. This missile sale is part of that effort to bolster Japan’s defense capabilities.

Supporting US foreign policy and national security goals

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated that the sale would support US foreign policy objectives and national security goals by enhancing the security of a key ally in the Indo-Pacific region, which plays a crucial role in political stability and economic progress.

Enhancing Japan's defence capabilities

The DSCA further emphasized that the sale would help Japan improve its ability to defend its homeland and US personnel stationed there, while ensuring that Japan could integrate the new systems effectively into its military forces.

Congressional approval pending

The State Department has approved the potential sale, and the DSCA has provided the necessary notification to Congress, which must still approve the transaction.
