Milestones in Gender Equality
Notably, the UAE advanced to 7th place globally and maintained its top regional position in the UN Gender Equality Index 2024, as issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Increased representation in government
The UAE saw a rise in women’s representation in its government this year, exemplified by the appointment of Sana bint Mohammed Suhail as the Minister of Family, following the creation of the new ministry. This appointment highlights the ongoing progress towards gender parity in governance.
National policy for women’s health
In line with its commitment to women’s welfare, the UAE launched the National Policy for Improving Women's Health in 2024. This policy aims to establish a comprehensive framework to ensure women have access to top-tier preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative healthcare throughout their lives.
Strengthening women’s roles in the economy
To further enhance women’s contributions to sustainable economic development, the Ministry of Economy introduced a directive requiring private joint-stock companies to reserve at least one seat for women on their boards of directors starting in 2025. This move is part of a broader national strategy to diversify business leadership and promote gender equality in the corporate world.
Partnerships for economic empowerment
The Ministry of Economy and the General Women’s Union signed a cooperation agreement aimed at advancing women’s economic empowerment. This partnership focuses on boosting the participation of women entrepreneurs and increasing their contributions to both local and regional economies.
Support for women entrepreneurs
The General Women’s Union launched the second phase of the Women's Economic Empowerment Programme, designed to equip Emirati women with essential skills in various sectors, particularly entrepreneurship. This initiative helps women start or expand small and medium-sized businesses, fostering their economic independence and success.
Government initiatives for gender balance
During the 2024 UAE Government’s annual meetings, the Emirati Talent Competitiveness Council and the UAE Gender Balance Council signed an agreement to enhance Emirati women’s participation in the private sector. This agreement aims to implement joint initiatives and programs that promote gender balance and sustainable development.
Women’s representation in education and workforce
Women continue to make significant strides in education and employment. In 2024, women made up 70% of university graduates in the UAE, represented 46% of the total workforce, and 68% of them were employed in the public sector. Women also hold nearly one-third of ministerial positions and comprise 50% of the Federal National Council's seats, underlining their critical role in shaping the UAE’s future.
