Sharjah24 - WAM: Flight operations in Delhi, India’s premier airport, have been severely disrupted by a toxic smog, which reduced visibility to 100 metres.
More than half of the 1,400 daily flights handled by the airport have been delayed in the last 24 hours, according to Flightradar24, an online portal that live-tracks flights across the world.
These include 506 departures and 218 arrivals. Twenty-one flights were cancelled and 15 others were diverted to other airports in states unaffected by the smog.
If the delays, cancellations and arrival diversions continue, it could have a cascading effect on flight operations all over India, aviation experts warned. This is because Delhi is the operational hub for several airlines.
Indigo, the airline which operates the largest number of flights at Delhi airport, urged passengers to “allow extra travel time and check your flight status before starting your journey from home to the airport.” Other Indian carriers followed suit.
Delhi International Airport Limited warned that “low visibility procedures are in progress and flight operations are affected at Delhi Airport. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.”
